The main reason for this increasing number is tuition-free education. Germany is one of those countries that offer tuition-free education to both local and international students. Instead, tuition fees in America are extremely high.

America is also one of the world’s most popular destinations for higher education among international students. But education in the US is very expensive for American students. An average two-year education in a public college cost around $3,730 to an American student. It’s just tuition and fees. If you also add living expenses in this amount then the total cost reaches $18,420. Similarly, a four-year degree at a public university cost around $26,590 to an American student. It includes; $10,440 tuition fees and $16,150 living expenses.

If we talk about private American universities. Then they are even twice more expensive than public universities. A four-year bachelor in a private American university cost around $26,000 to $50,000 to an American student. It’s way too expensive!

Cost to study in Germany as an American student:

There are around 240 public universities in Germany offering tuition-free education. They are also offering around 20,000 degrees and courses. These universities attract thousands of international students each year including a good number of American students. In 2019, 6,158 American students enrolled in German universities.

Generally, German public universities are offering free education. But some universities charge a little amount on the name of administrative charges or semester fee. These charges have ranged between 200 to 500€ and vary from university to university.

If we talk about living expenses in Germany. Then Germany is a very affordable country to live for international students. Transport is free for students (inside the city or state where you are studying), apartment rent, insurance contribution, and food expenses are also lowest as compare to other European countries. Then must learn the German language according to the requirement of the course. The minimum level required to take admission in an undergraduate course is B2 level.

If you are lucky to find undergraduate courses in the English language. Then skip the German language proficiency certificate. You also don’t need the German language to study master and other doctoral degrees. Now almost all public universities in Germany are offering doctoral degrees in the English language.

Residing in Germany

US citizens can enjoy 90 days of stay in Germany without entry visas. But to stay longer than 90 days, US citizens required to apply for a temporary residence permit in the local immigration office of Germany.

Find accommodation once you arrive in Germany. Make a rental agreement with the accommodation provider and register your address in the city registration office.

Now visit the nearest immigration office (Ausländerbehörde) or book an online appointment for application of residence permit. Provide them all the documents according to their checklist and get your residence permit.

Health insurance

According to German law; everyone residing in Germany must have health insurance including all EU and non-EU students. You can get this health insurance from any public or private health insurance company. Normally, health insurance required to enroll in a German university and to get a residence permit. So, get it as early as possible or right after arrival in Germany.
