International students in Germany – statistics 2019/2020


Germany is a well-liked land amongst international students. That is why Germany has converted into a popular education destination for international students in the non-English speaking world. Currently, approximately 374,583 international students are studying in Germany. These international students have come to Germany from various parts of the world.
The year-by-year number of international students is increasing in Germany. According to the newest statistics, 340,305 international students in 2016, 358,895 international students in 2017, and 374,583 international students have registered in 2018. Around 15,688 more students enrolled in German universities in 2018 as compared to 2017. The primary reason for this increasing enrolment is tuition-free education.

If we talk about international students according to the country of origin. Then statistics show that 36,915 Chinese students, 17,294 Indian students, 11,130 Austrian students, 10,795 Russian students, 8,908 Italian students, 8,618 Syrian students, 7,633 Turkish students, 7,527 Irani Students, 7,344 Cameroonian students, 7,202 French students, 7,037 Ukrainian students, 6,470 Bulgarian students, 6,201 Spanish students, 6,158 American students, 5,843 South Korean students, 5,445 Tunisian students, 5,297 Moroccan students, 5,006 Polish students, 4,938 Indonesian students and 4,928 Pakistani students are studying in Germany.

Here 282,002 are those international students that are called Bildungsauslaender. Remaining 92,581 are called Bildungsinlaender. Bildungsinlaender are those non-native students studying Studienkolleg in Germany. Bildungsauslaender are those non-native students who have come to Germany for higher education.

Biggest Contributors:

China and India are the biggest contributor countries that sending their students to Germany for higher studies. Both countries are on top of the list from the past several years. Germany’s plan was to attract 350,000 new international students in 2020 but this target has already exceeded the limit in 2019.
