Students from the European Union are treated as normal German students. They have free access to German job market and allowed to work upto 20 hour per week as part time job in Germany. Non European students are only allowed to work 120 full or 240 half days as part time job in Germany. Students get a work permit along with residence permit for part time job in Germany. The limit of 120 full and 240 half days always stated on this work permit. Without this work permit students are not allowed to do part time job in Germany.
German companies normally offer part time job as mini job to all the students. A mini job is basically a part time job with a certain limit. A mini jobber can earn upto 450 euros tax free. If one earn above then 450 euros then tax deduction is necessary.
If one work as student assistant or research assistant in a university. Then this job not counted in 120 days. Mandatory internship also not counted in 120 days. But voluntary internship counted in 120 days limit. Rules for language and foundation course students are different. They only allowed to work with permission of Federal Employment Agency/Foreigners Office and only during the study break.
Important Questions About Student Work in Germany:
In reality student earn more than 450 euros. They do mini jobs, work more hours and pay tax on above money. A student can earn 6 to 700 euros per month normally with minijob.
Some students only do mini job whole year. Some do seasonal jobs only once a year. With mini job student can earn only 6 to 700 euros monthly. But with seasonal job they can earn 5 to 6000 euros in just 3 months. Earnings depends in which company one is doing the seasonal job. Some pay less and some pay more.
Full day means doing work 8 hours and half means 4 hours a day. 120 means, a student can only work 4 months as 8 hours per day. 240 means, a student can only work 8 months as 4 hours per day.
A mini job is basically a minor job with a certain limit as per law. All the jobs with 120 full and 240 half day limit are called mini jobs.
There are two types of mini jobs. One is limited to a certain earnings limit. Other is limited to certain time limit. For example if a company give work in which one can only earn 450 euros. It’s a mini job with earning limit. If a company give 10 hours work per week and not more. It’s a mini job with time limit. It’s confusing but I hope you will understand.

In Germany many big companies like Volkswagen, Daimler and Amazon offer seasonal jobs for students in summer and winter breaks. These jobs are called seasonal jobs. Their duration last from one month to 3 months.
Students can earn from 5000 to 10000 per year with seasonal jobs. But they have to pay tax and social payments like a normal German citizen. Good news is that students can take paid tax back at end of the year.
If student earn less than 8,130 euros a year. Then they can get all the taxes back at end of the year by submitting an income tax return to the tax authorities. No tax return on earnings above then 8,130 euros. That’s why student don’t try to exceed this limit.
Students can file tax return of previous year in the next year till 31st of May. For example for year 2017, one can file tax return in 2019 till 31st of May 2019.
They need public health insurance for these jobs. With cheap private health insurance companies refuse to give this job. Students normal get this job by switching from private to public health insurance.
